Chiropractic Management of Tongue Tie and Breastfeeding Issues

The Tongue Tie Chiropractor Brisbane

Breastfeeding is a natural and important process for both the mother and the baby. However, for some mothers, breastfeeding can become challenging due to various reasons such as tongue tie. Tongue tie in babies, also known as Ankyloglossia, is a condition where the thin piece of skin (frenulum) under the baby's tongue is too short, which restricts the movement of the tongue and makes it difficult to breastfeed.

At Geebung Family Chiropractic, we believe in a holistic approach to healthcare and aim to provide support to mothers facing difficulties with breastfeeding. Our chiropractors are trained to assess and address issues related to tongue tie and breastfeeding as well as other areas of paediatric chiropractic care and are committed to providing quality paediatric chiropractic care for Brisbane families.

How can Chiropractic help tongue tie?

Chiropractors do not diagnose or revise tongue-ties, however Chiropractors can assess children for compensations in the musculoskeletal system which may be associated with tongue-tie, breastfeeding issues or Craniofacial imbalances.

Chiropractic care can help to support the management of tongue tie and breastfeeding issues in several ways. Firstly, chiropractors can use gentle adjustments to release tension in the cranium, jaw and neck, which can aim to alleviate discomfort and pain in the breastfeeding mother. Secondly, chiropractors can provide at home advice and exercises to help improve the movement and positioning of the baby's tongue and jaw, aimed at making it easier for them to latch onto the breast.

We strongly believe in a multidisciplinary approach to breastfeeding issues, tongue-tie and other Craniofacial concerns and will always do our best to find you the support needed to obtain the best results for your family. For families concerned about feeding and breastfeeding issues, we recommend consulting professionals such as a Lactation Consultant & Orofacial Myofunctional Therapist in conjunction with the family dentist and GP.

Is surgery necessary for tongue tie?

In some cases, surgical intervention may be necessary to release the tongue tie. In these cases, chiropractic care can be used to provide optimal function prior to intervention to complement the surgical procedure and provide support during the recovery process.
